Celebrating the “Festival of Lights”

The basketball court at Jurong Green Community Club was transformed into a celebratory venue that depict light, laughter and colour on 10 November, as more than 1,000 residents came together to celebrate Deepavali, which is also known as the “Festival of Lights”, through a variety show.

The event kicked off with an opening dance by a group of Swathi dancers from the community club. This was followed by an introduction on the significance of Deepavali and a medley of Indian songs. Mr Ang Wei Neng, Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC, launched the festive light-up and the joyous atmosphere was illuminated by a series of dance performances.

As the attendees sat down for a sumptuous dinner of nasi briyani, they were entertained by Vijay TV artistes Ilayaraja, Arokia Dass and Nirmala, who performed traditional Indian songs. Dressed in bright yellow and pink traditional Indian costumes, a group of dancers also performed a Manimaran dance.

As he mingled with the crowd and took group photos with them, Mr Ang said the Deepavali variety show organised by the Jurong Green IAEC was a great opportunity for all the participants, from different cultures, to enjoy Deepavali together and get to know our multicultural community better.
