Yuhua residents toss to an auspicious Chinese New Year

The ongoing Covid-19 crisis did not dampen the festive spirits of the 1,200 guests who jubilantly attended the “mega toss” on 2 February at the Yuhua Village Hard Court located at Block 252 Jurong East Street 24. The event is an annual Yuhua community tradition to commemorate Chinese New Year.

Indeed, the evening was a great occasion to celebrate new and old friendships, as the guests tucked into a sumptuous communal dinner and tossed a hearty plate of “yusheng”. The joyous mood of the event was also elevated by an exciting lion dance and the appearance of the “Fortune God”, who went around to offer prosperity greetings to diners.

As the night went on, the festive mood was driven to a new high, thanks to energetic performances put up by various groups of young performers. One of the highlights was a drum performance by Fuhua Primary School, and one of the lead performers found a creative way to belt out his act by using a Milo tin.

In a Facebook comment to Crest Secondary’s video performance post, guest of honour Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Adviser to Yuhua Grassroots Organisations, noted that the school’s funky modern dance performance was especially popular with the audience. “I have not seen the crowd so responsive before. The confidence of the dancers on stage was impressive and the audience was thrilled!” she said.
