Taman Jurong pays tribute to its Merdeka Generation residents

To recognise the contribution of the Merdeka Generation (MG) – Singaporeans born between 1950 and 1959 – Taman Jurong neighbourhood organised a series of tribute sessions over the months of June, July and early August. During this event, the MG honorees received a specially-designed medal from Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

They also visited the MG booth set up by Ministry of Social and Family Development to know more information on the benefits available to them. Almost 80 per cent of the MG residents from Taman Jurong – has highest number of MGs – have already attended the tribute sessions titled “Honouring Our Merdeka Generation”.

The contribution of the MG was first highlighted during the Budget 2019 announcement. The MG grew up during the tumultuous years of the 1950s and early 1960s, and later steered the labour force during turbulent times, building a sturdy foundation for the future of Singapore. The men of the generation were among the earliest to serve National Service, while some of the women left school early to support their families.

Together with the Pioneer Generation (PG), the MG has contributed greatly towards the building of Singapore in its earliest days.
