A three-day celebration of arts took place in YiLin Art Club at the Jurong Green Community Club, attracting artists and art lovers from the neighbourhood. Mr Ang Wei Neng, Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC, and Adviser to Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisations (GROs), inaugurated the exhibition much to the delight of the artists and guests, giving an opportunity to mingle and share a mutual appreciation of the artworks on display.
The theme of the exhibition which took place from September 20 to 22 was “Traditional Culture”, which saw participation by students from schools located within the Jurong community. The budding artists were thrilled to have been able to showcase their talent and interact with professional artists.
The art club was set up in 1995 by a group of art enthusiasts such as artist Ang Cheng Chye and the then Community Club Management Committee Chairman, Lee Hai Hiang where aspiring artists could hone their talent and learn through mutual exchange of knowledge. In the same year, the club held its first exhibition at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, gathering artworks from diverse regions such as US, Denmark and China.
The exhibition, in fact, encouraged members and residents to join the club and develop a grassroots arts scene in Jurong. Today, the club has more than 100 members and still growing.
