With climate change resulting in heatwaves and flash floods across the globe, protecting our environment has become more urgent than ever. To support Singapore’s green movement, residents gathered at the open area beside Block 364 Clementi Avenue 2 to attend Clementi Clean and Green Day on November 2.
Together with the residents, Dr Tan Wu Meng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry, and Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC (Clementi) planted five Planchonella obovata trees. Originating from Southeast Asia and in countries such as Taiwan and India, the Planchonella obovata is a small, medium-sized tree that spots a coppery-gold appearance due to the colour of its leaves. It can grow up to 28 metres tall and one can see clusters of greenish-white flowers when the tree is in full bloom.
Addressing residents during the tree-planting event, Dr Tan said: “When we plant a tree, we are sending across a very important message of hope and belief for a bright future. Planting a tree is akin to providing a shade for the future generation as we hope that future generations will help to tend the tree and enjoy its shade. As long as we keep planting trees, Singapore will become a better and brighter place for future generations.”
Dr Tan was also happy to meet many different Clementi residents spanning several generations during the event. “We’ve met seniors who helped build and nurture Singapore when we just became independent; parents who are building families and building Singapore today; and little children who are our future and tomorrow,” wrote Dr Tan in a Facebook post.
