Building strong social bonds

by Our Neighbourhood
Building strong social bonds

Strong, healthy relationships are vital in our lives, and social ties with family members, friends and neighbours can impact your mental, emotional and even physical well-being. Studies have found that having a variety of social relationships may help to reduce stress and heart-related risks, while loneliness and social isolation are linked to poorer health, depression and increased risk of early death.

To encourage interaction and strengthen bonds among Bukit Batok residents and its volunteers, Bukit Batok Zone 12 Residents’ Network (RN) organised its first Skypeak Carnival, in conjunction with the official opening of the RN Zone 12 Centre. Apart from gathering and forming new interest groups, the RN also hopes to raise awareness on community services provided by the respective agencies.

Some of the highlights of the carnival included a tree planting ceremony, balloon sculpting, huge bouncing castles for children to play, and booths on safety and first aid. The new RN centre at Block 293A Bukit Batok East Avenue 6 boasts a children’s library comprising hundreds of books that are regularly renewed by the National Library Board. During the event, Good Neighbour awards were presented to five individuals who were nominated by their fellow neighbours for their good deeds.

Mr Murali Pillai, Member of Parliament for Bukit Batok SMC who attended the event, said in a Facebook post: “It was a special day for the residents of SkyPeak@Bukit Batok. We had a carnival where everyone – young and old – had fun dancing, playing or simply chatting with neighbours.”
