Chinese New Year cheer with hongbaos in Bukit Batok East

It was a season of joy in January and over 3,000 seniors in Bukit Batok East received red packets from Madam Rahayu Mahzam, Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC (Bukit Batok East), at the recent hongbao presentation sessions. Madam Rahayu also joined Toh Guan and Jurong East residents for their Chinese New Year Dinner on 2 February.

Despite concerns over the ongoing Covid-19 situation, Madam Rahayu noted that the mood at the dinner was festive and upbeat. In her speech at the event, she shared a heart-warming story about a young boy who gave out cold drinks to volunteers manning the mask collection centre at the Jurong East View RC. “Certain situations could bring about a lot of panic and worry, but they also provide opportunities for the human spirit to shine. I believe if we rally together, we can be strong as a community,” she said in a Facebook post.

Madam Rahayu also thanked her team of grassroots leaders and volunteers, who worked hard to raise funds for the red packets and partnered with the Lions Club Singapore to create a meaningful programme for the seniors during the hongbao presentation sessions. “I hope the seniors remain healthy and active always, and have a happy new year ahead,” she said.
